In today’s world, Shevchenko’s life would be seen as one of true success. A village boy, he persevered through serfdom into freedom, becoming Ukraine’s first poet of the people, and writing in the common tongue. He did more than use familiar words — he gave voice to the feelings and aspirations of millions: to be free, to have their own state, and to speak their language without fear.
